Visit Britain to have presence at Beijing Olympics

Visit Britain to have presence at Beijing Olympics A small party from the tourism agency VisitBritain is travelling to the Beijing Olympics to generate interest for training facilities in the United Kingdom ahead of the 2012 Games in London.

At a cost of around £50,000, VisitBritain is sending a six-strong delegation to secure future business for regional and national UK sporting facilities.

Tom Wright, VisitBritain chief executive, will head the delegation to promote various venues that can be used as training camps ahead of the London Games in four years' time.

During visits to Beijing and Macau, the group will meet sporting teams to gauge individual requirements as well as highlighting the various economic benefits of each training facility.

A pre-Games training camp prospectus has been specially created to showcase the features and benefits of UK sporting venues.

VisitBritain will also make presentations to the National Olympic Committee as well as each federation of the 26 sports that will see competition at London 2012.

Mr Wright revealed that "being in Beijing this summer marks the first stage of our strategy to spread the economic benefits of the Olympics throughout the UK and raise the profile and awareness of Britain as a destination".

Organisers of previous Games in Barcelona and Sydney were able to use the event to boost visitor numbers to Spain and Australia respectively, and VisitBritain hopes for a similar result.

It is estimated that London 2012 could generate around £2 billion for the tourism economy, including £1.5 billion for the capital, according research by Oxford Economic Forecasting.

VisitBritain conducted research recently of consumers in 35 countries which indicated that the key areas of visitor growth could come from Asia thanks to the buzz created by the Beijing Olympics.
