Virgin Atlantic backs travel to Kenya

Virgin Atlantic backs travel to Kenya A dedicated Virgin Atlantic advertising campaign has been launched to encourage tourists to return to the African country of Kenya.

Following Kenyan government elections in December, a series of unrest erupted in the country that left 1,500 people dead and 300,000 displaced from their homes.

Speaking in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Virgin Atlantic president Sir Richard Branson said that post-election troubles "have now subsided".

He explained that a UN-brokered treaty between president Mwai Kibaki and the former opposition leader, now prime minister, Raila Odinga, had brought stability to the political system.

"Tourism in Kenya is the number one industry for the nation and visiting now will make a huge difference to the locals who rely on the industry for their living."

"Kenya has been enjoying a considerable increase in tourist arrivals for the past five years with 2007 recording the highest number, with over two million tourists," he added.

The Virgin Atlantic advertising campaign features the migration of wildebeest across the country and is due to be seen in the national press, as well as at various transport hubs.

Equally, the operator is running a daily service from Heathrow to Nairobi on one of its Airbus A340 aircraft.

For all bookings made prior to May 31st for travel before June 19th or between August 25th and December 8th, a special return fare of £417.80 is available.

Sir Richard is also reportedly due to invest in Kenya's Masai Mara game reserve to create a luxury lodge for holidaymakers.
