UK companies choose not to ban business travel

UK companies choose not to ban business travel In spite of the difficult economic conditions at present, the majority of big British businesses have declined to place a complete freeze on business travel.

The Institute of Travel Management (ITM) surveyed 175 UK companies and found that most companies are instead choosing to limit all non-essential business travel.

Around 20 per cent of respondents had considered a business travel ban but believed that the measure would only ever be a very short-term initiative.

Equally, over 30 per cent indicated that increased energy prices had little or no effect on travel arrangements or policy.

It was also revealed that new technologies such as videoconferencing were being used by businesses to stay connected internationally.

Colin Goldney from Argate Consulting, ITM's research partner, said to TravelMole that businesses choosing to limit travel now may be slow to resume operation when the economy recovers.

Mr Goldney also indicated that changes in behaviour driven by economic and environmental factors could lead to a "paradigm shift in the business travel sector".

"If companies look to technology over mandating travel bans, this presents different options for the future."

"When the economy picks up, changes in behaviour due to increased exposure to videoconferencing could result in executives travelling far less than before."

"The answer to the question of whether this is really likely to happen is the same as the answer to whether we are moving into recession," he added.
