Survey suggest wealthy travellers still want value for money

Survey suggest wealthy travellers still want value for money The vast majority of wealthy travellers still demand value for money when booking a holiday, a poll has indicated.

In a survey of 278 American Express Centurion customers, 91 per cent said securing value for their expense was paramount when booking a holiday.

Equally, 42 per cent of wealthy individuals polled pointed to environmental issues, such as reducing their carbon footprint, as proving important.

However, 66 per cent of respondents said that the need for exclusivity also motivated their decision including choosing a discreet and private location.

The rich also wanted bespoke holiday packages with 72 per cent revealing a desire for breaks that are completely tailored to their needs.

Ramon Martin, managing director of American Express UK & Ireland, said that the word luxury "no longer purely applies to exquisite surroundings".

"High earning holidaymakers are more likely to look for value for money and seek out exclusive and unique destinations where they can come home with more than just a suntan, but also a new skill under their belts."

"The behaviour of this discreet group of trend-setting, super affluent consumers acts as a barometer to determine what's fuelling consumer spending habits," he added.

Mr Martin paid tribute to the Centurion Luxury Living Index which can "predict trends that will ultimately trickle down and affect broader consumer purchasing behaviour".

The index indicated that learning new skills proves highly popular among richer holidaymakers with 76 per cent choosing breaks such as learning meditation in Malaysia or fishing in Loch Lomond.
