Stansted airport's American Airlines expansion 'good news for business travellers'

Stansted airports American Airlines expansion good news for business travellers The arrival and forthcoming expansion of American Airlines flights from Stansted airport is a "significant moment" for the development of the airport as well as business-class customers, British Airports Authority (BAA) has stated.

American Airlines, which currently operates a daily service to New York JFK, will start twice daily flights from Stansted airport in April 2008, allowing business travellers living outside London greater flexibility in their travelling needs.

The expansion of the airline, which operates a two-class service, will benefit both business and leisure passengers as it gives direct access to destinations across the Americas and Caribbean from the JFK hub.

"The recent arrival of American Airlines, operating a daily service to New York JFK - double daily from April 2008 - gives us particular cause for celebration," a spokesperson for BAA Stansted Airport said.

"It is a significant moment for the airport, with this two-class service complementing perfectly the business class only services operated by MaxJet and Eos, who both serve JFK direct from Stansted.

Business class only airline Maxjet recently announced strong growth in business, more than doubling its number of passengers in a year, BAA revealed.

"With the introduction of American Airlines both business and leisure passengers will have direct access to the airlines expansive route network from their JFK hub, which connects directly to nearly 200 destinations across the Americas and Caribbean."

Strengthened transport links between the US and the UK are especially important given the rising value of the pound against the American dollar, which has made travel to the US more popular in recent months.

The UK pound has now climbed past the $2.10 level against the US dollar to the highest level seen for the past 26 years.

Indeed, BAA has stated that all of Stansted's transatlantic airlines had experienced "significantly increased bookings" over the past few weeks and in the run-up to Christmas.
