Regent Seven Seas plans ultra-luxury cruise ships

Regent Seven Seas plans ultra-luxury cruise ships Cruise operator Regent Seven Seas has revealed that it is in negotiations with manufacturers to create a brand-new, ultra-luxury liner.

Intended to come on-line in late 2011, the new ship will be able to accommodate 800 passengers with an entire deck devoted to an on-board spa.

Mark Conroy, Regent Seven Seas president, said at the UK cruise convention in Southampton that a full announcement of the plans could be ready to release next month.

He said that people who buy premium cabins on standard cruises or regularly fly business class are the type of customers who will be interested in ultra-luxury voyages.

"If you sell cruises you have luxury cruise customers. 85 per cent of luxury cruisers go on a contemporary or premium cruise before their luxury cruise," he added.

The company has just released the Masterpiece Series, which enables passengers to customise cruises by putting together components of different voyages.

Celia Abert, Regent marketing manager, said that the average Regent 116-night world cruise costs £33,805, which is £5 per day cheaper than a comparable trip on rival Cunard.

"This shows that we are not more expensive than at a similar level on other ships. Ultra luxury is affordable against other ships afloat," she added.

Regent recently released strong results including sales for 2009 cruises reportedly 100 per cent up on previous figures.

The US-owned company operates one 700-passenger liner alongside two smaller vessels and on average its customers pay around £4,500 for a luxury trip.

Typically an older target market with an average age of 56, 70,000 people take all-inclusive Regent trips each year.
