Outcry as Bush visit delays 40,000

Outcry as Bush visit delays 40,000 The British Airports Association (BAA) has been criticised by British Airways (BA) for allowing George W Bush to fly into Heathrow, causing the cancellation of at least 69 flights.

It is thought that the arrival of the US president to the UK ten days ago meant that over 40,000 passengers were delayed or disrupted.

"The decision to allow President Bush and his fleet of aircraft to fly into Heathrow rather than a military base was one all of Heathrow's users could have done without," claimed Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive.

The president's entourage consisted of two Boeing 747 jets and four helicopters, which caused the closure of runways.

Reports have claimed that the airport was reduced to one working runway for a short time on June 15th and June 16th, meaning that 260 flights were delayed for more than 30 minutes.

BAA has defended its decision to allow Air Force One to land at Heathrow, claiming that it provided Mr Bush with the highest level of security.

British Airways has not had the best year in 2008, after the disastrous opening of the £4.3-billion Terminal 5 meant that more than 500 flights were cancelled.

It is expected that transport secretary, Ruth Kelly will back plans for a third runway at the London airport tomorrow (Thursday) when a report is published on the cause of cancellations and delays.
