More Brits opt for Austria when booking a skiing holiday

More Brits opt for Austria when booking a skiing holiday Ski holidays in Austria are proving more and more popular among British holidaymakers as the country outperforms other destinations in Europe.

Strong growth in the Austrian skiing holiday market has come at the expense of winter sports destinations in Andorra and Italy.

The annual Crystal Ski Industry Report, revealed that during 2007-8 UK bookings of Austrian skiing holidays rose by 2.8 per cent to 21.8 per cent of the market.

This was mirrored by a decline in Italy's share of UK bookings by 1.8 per cent to 12 per cent and a 4.1 per cent fall in Andorra's share to seven per cent.

However, France is still the destination of choice among British skiing enthusiasts with a healthy market share of 37.5 per cent.

Matthew Prior, Crystal managing director, told TravelMole that Italy was suffering from a poor record snow-wise but the problems were even greater at Andorra.

"Andorra has been really suffering, partly because of its uncertain snow record, but the biggest issue is that it has tried to change its mix of clientele, moving away from cheap holidays, but has priced itself out of the market."

"Budget skiers have switched to Austria because it is offering good quality accommodation at good prices," he added.

Researchers used Civil Aviation Authority statistics alongside information from tour operators to discover a three per cent rise in 2007-8 ski holiday bookings to 1.23 million.

Equally, a five per cent increase in ski holiday bookings from schools was reported for the past year thanks largely to an early Easter and two half-term week periods.
