London gears up for Olympic handover

London gears up for Olympic handover A special ceremony is being arranged for the end of this year's Olympic Games to officially start the countdown to London 2012.

Both VisitBritain and Visit London have welcomed the ceremony to be held in Beijing on August 24th in front of an estimated global audience of 3 billion people.

To coincide with this, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has planned a simultaneous celebration in the UK.

This is all part of a concerted plan by UK tourism agencies to raise awareness prior to the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.

A film showcasing Britain's sporting history has been commissioned by VisitBritain to be shown all over the planet.

Tom Wright, VisitBritain chief executive, said that the official handover of the Olympic flag to London represents a "huge opportunity for us to celebrate around the world".

He added that this is a "chance to invite potential visitors to experience the quality and variety of destinations, attractions and events in Britain".

"We will give audiences a taste of what they can expect from Britain over the coming four years, in 2012 and beyond," he added.

James Bidwall, Visit London chief executive, agreed that the handover to London on August 24th is a "great cause for celebration for our city".

He added that the "handover will unite the whole of the country around this very special moment".

"The global spotlight will be on our city and I encourage Londoners and visitors to enjoy, celebrate and take part," he urged.

Visit London believes that the London 2012 Olympics could bring around £2.2 billion in revenue for the capital.
