Kingfisher set to fly in September

Kingfisher set to fly in September New Indian carrier Kingfisher will launch its debut flight to London from Bangalore next month.

The airline is being spearheaded by Vijay Mallya, the Kingfisher drinks billionaire and current 962nd richest person in the world.

Following a merger with Deccan Aviation, the newly formed group will trade under the name Deccan Aviation Limited but retain the Kingfisher brand.

Mr Mallya was previously rumoured to be considering investment in SpiceJet but instead opted to launch the airline that shares the name with his hugely successful Indian beer.

On 3 September, the maiden voyage for India's first ever five-star premium airline operator will travel from Bangalore to London.

Kingfisher has permission to operate flights to 13 destinations around the world after qualifying thanks to Deccan's five years spent servicing domestic routes.

This follows approval by the Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA) last month for Deccan Aviation Limited to begin expanding to overseas routes.

Officials at the airline intend to launch flights to the United Arab Emirates, United States, Thailand, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and various other destinations.

A spokesperson for the airline told The Economic Times that "we are fully geared up for our London flight scheduled for September 3rd" and revealed that this will be serviced by an Airbus 330-200 aircraft.

The carrier has also asked the DGCA for permission to host mobile phone calls during flights, which - if approved - will make it the first Indian carrier to do so.

According to domain-b.com, Kingfisher has already installed the appropriate technology to enable passenger mobile calls without interfering with the planes' navigation equipment.

This follows Emirates being the first ever airline to host mobile calls during a flight to the UK after communications watchdog Ofcom approved new regulations.
