Hong Kong International Airport has been honoured as the planet's best airport in the World Airport Awards™ 2008.
This follows a passenger survey conducted by UK-based aviation research company Skytrax of 8.2 million people around the world over a 10-month period.
Hong Kong beat 2006 winner Singapore Changi Airport into second place while Seoul Incheon Airport came in third and Kuala Lumpur International Airport was fourth.
Edward Plaisted, Skytrax chief executive, said that air travel has recently become "focussed on the time customers spend in the airport environment".
He indicated that "Hong Kong has established itself as a clear passenger favourite in this respect" which was reflected in the World Airport Survey.
Mr Plaisted indicated that Hong Kong was noted among the 190 airports under consideration for world-class standards that "make a customer want to use it again".
Moreover the survey revealed that both business and leisure passengers are becoming "more discerning about airport standards and facilities".
"Over the last 10 years, the Skytrax World Airport Awards™ have become recognised as the trusted, global symbol of quality for airports".
"Our survey participants represent the most experienced, diverse and discerning travellers in the marketplace, and airports throughout the world recognize the inherent value that comes with their endorsement," he added.
The best European airport proved to be Munich in Germany which was positioned at fifth best in the world.
San Francisco ranked as the best American airport while Tel Aviv proved the best hub in the Middle East and Cape Town the best African airport.
Manchester Airport is now trialling an Automated Border Clearance system which is hoped will increase security but also improve queuing times at the hub.
