Honeymoons still vital for newlyweds

Honeymoons still vital for newlyweds Although people are able to take more holidays and choose more destinations in today's world, a honeymoon is still as important as ever for newlyweds, with couples spending more money than ever before on their post-nuptial vacation, wedding experts say.

According to the Daily Telegraph, research from Mintel last year showed that honeymoon spending has doubled over the last decade, with UK couples spending between £500 million and £600 million on honeymoons annually.

Each couples spent an average of £3,000 on their honeymoon - with £205 shelled out on a special first-night hotel.

Francesca Moore, a spokesperson from hitched.co.uk, said that honeymoons are just as important to newlyweds in the modern world, as it is the first time that the couple are going to have alone together after the wedding ends.

"Going on a honeymoon prolongs the experience of getting married, so it's not over as soon as the last guest goes home at the end of the wedding night," she explained. "People do tend to go on their honeymoons straight away as well. We don't often hear of people waiting to go on their honeymoon, because then it just seems like a normal holiday.

"It's a big part of the whole wedding planning process, which they are going to go through anyway, so yes it's a huge deal."

Ms Moore added that the Maldives are one of the top destinations for honeymooners, due to the weather and romantic appeal, but added that different couples opt for a range of honeymoon choices.

"Some people want the sunshine and some people want skiing. It depends when you get married as well, because if you get married in the winter you're probably going to want to go away to a hot destination. You can go on a honeymoon to anywhere in the world so you can make it as unique to you as you like," she explained.
