Golden makeover for British Olympics plane
Britain's successful Olympic team will travel home in a plane with a golden nose in honour of their achievements, British Airways (BA) has announced.
Team GB has enjoyed its best Olympics for a century, including winning 18 gold medals and holding third place in the medals table behind China and the United States at the time of writing.
Tim Brabant today took the latest Team GB gold after outpacing the field in the 1,000 metres canoeing contest.
BA has now announced that the Boeing 747 which has been earmarked to bring the athletes home will have its dark blue nose-cone sprayed gold to celebrate Team GB's success.
Willie Walsh, BA chief executive, told the Press Association that "Team GB has led the opposition home in event after event at this golden Olympics".
"It is right that a gold nose cone should adorn the aircraft that brings the team home to the UK. We salute our Olympians," he added.
The Beijing Olympics is due to come to a close this Sunday after 10,500 athletes have competed in 302 events across 28 sports.
London mayor Boris Johnson has flown out to the Chinese capital this weekend to receive the Olympic flame as London officially takes on the mantle ahead of the 2012 Games.
However, BA refused to comment on reports that it had declined Mr Johnson an upgrade on his economy ticket to the first-class cabin.
A spokesperson for the airline commented to the Press Association that "we are not able to discuss the travel plans of individual customers".
