First Emirates A380 flight set for New York

First Emirates A380 flight set for New York The maiden flight for Emirates' new fleet of A380 superjumbos will run from its key hub in Dubai to New York's JFK Airport, it has been announced.

Emirates is the largest customer for the A380 superjumbo with 58 of the aircraft currently on order with Airbus at a reported cost of $18.8 billion (£9.4 billion).

The state-of-the-art aeroplanes can fly up to a 15,000 kilometres altitude even at full load thanks to powerful Engine Alliance GP7200 engines.

Equally, the craft achieves admirable fuel economy at 3.1 litres for every 100 passenger kilometres, which even relatively outperforms many hybrid cars.

Furthermore, the reduced inside and outside noise generated by the planes means a more comfortable ride for passengers and less disruption for the environment.

The first A380 will service the 14-hour flight to New York and mark the maiden voyage for Airbuses' new flagship craft into America.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Group, said that the Americas "represent a key focus area in Emirates' route development plans".

"We are delighted to be the first airline to launch commercial A380 services to the continent."

"We are confident that Emirates' customers travelling to and from North America will welcome the A380's additional space and capacity."

Sheikh Al Maktoum added that the luxurious onboard amenities of the Emirates A380 "will provide a very high quality travel experience previously associated only with private jets".

The specially designed interior and full Emirates livery of the huge aircraft will be revealed at a ceremony on July 28th at Airbus' Hamburg facility.
