Delhi to host the world's second largest airport terminal

Delhi to host the worlds second largest airport terminal The world's second largest airport terminal is to be built in the Indian city of Delhi at Indira Ghandi International (IGI) Airport.

Work is expected to be completed on the giant new terminal by 2010 in time for the Commonwealth Games which are to be held in the city.

When completed, IGI's new Terminal Three will cover 20 acres of land and provide 5,200,000 square metres of space to handle 34 million passengers each year.

The new terminal will be able to handle the Airbus A380, the largest commercial aircraft.

It will only be smaller than the recently opened 9,860,000 square metre terminal at Beijing Airport which was constructed for the summer Olympic Games.

Prabhakar Roa, chief executive of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), told PTI: "Our focus is on three Ms — men, material and machinery. That is helping us giving shape to this major project."

Mr Roa revealed that factories are already in operation at the project site to produce the concrete and steel required for the massive construction project.

However, Mr Roa said that it would be a "challenge" to complete the third terminal project in the estimated 37 weeks that has been mooted.

He pointed out that both Beijing's new terminal and Terminal 5 at Heathrow took 60 weeks to complete, while Changi at Singapore took 76 months to finish.

Around 24,000 workers from 44 separate contractors are employed on the project which is made more complicated because it is based in an earthquake-prone area.
