British Airways voted least environmentally-friendly brand

British Airways voted least environmentally-friendly brand British Airways has picked up the award for the being the worst of all brands, companies and products when it comes to caring for the environment, a poll for Marketing Week has revealed.

Not only did British Airways turn out to be the least green of all, but three other airlines also came in the top five, with American Airlines voted second least eco-friendly, Ryanair taking third place and easyJet considered fifth worst for being concerned about the environment.

While only nine per cent of respondents said that a brand's environmental values were "very important" when it came to purchasing decisions, 58 per cent said green credentials were "quite important".

David Benady, contributing editor to Marketing Week, said, "It goes to show that global warming awareness campaigns have registered in people's consciousness. This is a fairly damning result for BA and I expect they're very embarrassed."

Yet Mr Benady said he was surprised that the low-budget airlines had not placed higher than the British flagship, but acknowledged that a recent Greenpeace campaign may have contributed to the negative image of BA. Greenpeace loudly condemned British Airways' introduction of domestic flights between Gatwick and Newquay in March.

A British Airways spokesman said the company was "very surprised at the report's findings", asserting that the carrier has "the most long-standing and serious environmental commitment in the aviation industry".

BA pointed out that it was the first airline to set targets for fuel efficiency and has participated in schemes to offset carbon emissions.

"The public harshly judges those brands that fail to shrug off a reputation for contributing to environmental ruin. Gas-guzzling 4x4s, airlines and fast food retailers have scored worst of all in our green survey," commented Marketing Week.

"British Airways, American Airways and Ryanair are identified as the most environmentally unfriendly brands by well over 40 per cent of respondents, closely followed by Range Rover, easyJet, Land Rover and Jeep."
