BAA told to scrap 5,000 Heathrow flights

BAA told to scrap 5,000 Heathrow flights The British Airports Association (BAA) has been told to cut almost 5,000 of its annual flights at Heathrow Airport.

Lobby group, London First has said that action should be taken to reduce the amount of congestion and delays at the London airport.

The group said that BAA could reduce its delays by cutting one per cent of its flights that currently depart from the base.

"While proposals for Runway 3 will undeniably address capacity issues in the long term, we need a better Heathrow now," claimed Baroness Valentine, chief executive of London First.

It is thought transport secretary, Ruth Kelly is expected to back plans for a third runway, as well as supporting the report when it is launched.

However, Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, is expected to reject the report by London First at a conference today, claiming that increased passenger capacity is fundamental to the success of the airport.

Mr Matthews, speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, talked about the importance of enlarging Heathrow to maintain its high status in the UK and internationally.

Figures reveal that four in ten flights from London airport are delayed because the two runways currently operate at 99 per cent of capacity.

It''s a shame that BAA and the Government won''t face up to their responsibilities and help the people who''s lives and properties have been blighted by the prospect of expansion.
BAA should start buying properties now!

I''m sorry, but people neighbouring LHR have to recognise the fundemental need for the UK to have a successful and substantial international airport to (at the very least) maintain and grow our economy. The vast majority of opinion in the south-east and the rest of UK favour a third runway at LHR but somehow this opinion and blatant need is shouted down by a small minority.
